Project Overview

A residential client in West Yorkshire approached Manzil Studio to extend their ground-floor living space and to create a garden outbuilding for use as a home studio. The project required full planning permission from the local authority.

The Brief

The client needed a large open-plan kitchen-dining space to accommodate a growing family, alongside a detached outhouse to serve as a quiet workspace separate from the main dwelling. The site had limited rear garden depth, requiring careful massing to satisfy planning policy and maintain amenity for neighbouring properties.

Our Approach

We carried out a pre-application feasibility study to assess the planning constraints before committing to a design direction. The extension was designed with a lean-to mono-pitch roof to remain subordinate to the host dwelling  a key consideration under local planning policy. Roof lights were introduced to maximise natural light into the rear of the plan without increasing overall height. The outhouse was positioned to preserve outlook and retain sufficient garden space, with materials matched to the existing property to satisfy planning officers

Outcome
